( Étude No. 1 ) Video/Action for New Bark

[When the feed begins, the image is a bit blurry and shaky as the Igglybuff holding it can barely stand still, it's just too heavy. It's pretty amazing that she hasn't dropped it yet, actually. The image may be far from perfect but there's definitely nothing wrong with audio:]

Open the door! It's so unfair!! And you're calling yourself a mother?!

[Is she's going to hold a grudge on this "mom" person for not letting her eat breakfast? Yes.

Then, Igglybuff cries out, trying to get the yelling girl's attention, but with no luck. However, the Pokémon finally finds a way to steady the image a little by putting the Pokégear on the ground, while she holds its both sides. The image finally becomes more focused; there's a girl standing in front of the door...and she's about to kick them when Igglybuff squeaks once again, louder this time. Only then she gives Igglybuff her attention.]

Is something wrong? H-Hey, when did you turn that on?

[She leaps forward to cover the camera with both of her hands. What an introduction. After clearing her throat twice, she pulls her hands away and flashes a grin.]

Umm...sorry about that? Anyway! I'm Kaori Miyazono, I've just arrived here...and I'm not sure what to do? All I know is that I'm supposed to go on an adventure!

[It seems like she has already accepted the situation she found herself in...]

[Kaori would like to know herself what Igglybuff is doing, but once Happiny is out of the way, she stops growing. That's when Kaori gives her a hard squeeze, making the Pokémon deflate. Before she scolds her, the girl looks at Happiny being held by the hair.]

Are you sure she's going to be alright...?

[You don't want to make Happiny faint, do you Asuka...]

And you! [Inevitably, Kaori turns her attention to Igglybuff, stretching her body a bit.] Jealousy is not cute at all!

She should be grateful. I'm finally holding her up, which is what she wanted me to do from the start. Isn't that right?

[ Well, at least she doesn't seem to be in pain or anything, swaying back and forth in Asuka's grip. Though Asuka reluctantly ends up just putting her back down again, combing her fingers through the curl so that it isn't messy... ]

Perhaps it just wants attention, is all. Like a damn infant...seriously, it really does feel like we're playing babysitter. I can't believe we're stuck with these brats...I can only imagine how much harder it's going to be once she starts breathing fire.

I think she is grateful...or will be in a minute...

[You can run, but you can't hide from Happiny.]

If you put it like that they really do look like babies. Look! [She's pointing at a trainer who's passing by, their Pokémon walking by their side (thankfully they don't catch eye contact, so she shouldn't worry about battling). It's nowhere as small as their own starters.] That one's bigger and looks much stronger than them, too.

A-And breathing fire? You sure she can do that?

[Kaori's taking it literally, apparently.]

Makes me wonder why we got stuck with the brats...

[ Aw, poor Happiny looks like its tearing up a little bit...Asuka just ignores it, for now. ]

But supposedly, yes. I've been told I can teach it a move called Flamethrower, which...well, does the obvious. Personally, I'm a bit skeptical, but...

Maybe because we're young...

[Something tells her that's not it, but she doesn't have another idea how to explain why they ended up with these Pokémon. At the same time, Kaori's pretty sure that Asuka may be just a little bit older than her, if not the same age as her.]

Flamethrower? [It speaks for itself already, which doesn't mean it's less surprising.] Maybe you should wait with this...How do you even teach someone, anyone such a move...

[Kaori gazes at both Igglybuff (that can apparently learn flamethrower as well, but she's fine with not knowing it) and Happiny and squints her eyes. Just how...]

[She grimaces just a bit at that. Sure, she certainly looks 14, but...]

I don't think that's it. What, though, do you think it's too early to teach it how to shoot flames from its mouth?

[Unaware of the reason behind that grimace, Kaori tilts her head, awaiting explanation that never comes.]

Well, whatever the reason, I can't complain. [Despite scolding her a little while ago, she nuzzles her face into Igglybuff.] Cute just like the owner! Or should I say trainer? Getting used to the vocabulary will take a while...

I've always been thinking that there's always time to learn new things...but I didn't really mean shooting flames. Not even once...what if it got hurt throwing these flames? It's so small, too...

[Way to go Kaori, why not point out all of its possible weaknesses...]

[It's a bit of a sore spot. She never liked being treated as a child, after all.]

You really do have quite the tender nature, don't you...

In any case, if it's going to fight, it needs something with a bit more power behind it than these tiny little pink stubs it calls arms. Personally, I'm surprised it even knows how to throw a goddamn punch. Besides...I'll see to it that it doesn't get hurt. Like it or not, it's my responsibility.

[However, her punches may be far more effective than Igglybuff's for the time being.]

Just don't think I'm some helpless girl who can't protect herself! You, on the other hand...you're the opposite of tender, aren't you?

[It became clear earlier, when she picked up Happiny from her arms.]

That's one way to look at it, I guess. But how are you supposed to teach it breathe flames? I mean you can teach it yourself how to punch more effectively, but flamethrower?

[Asuka's tongue may be sharp, but not to that extent...]

[ If one didn't think it was possible for Asuka's lips to curl into a smile, they're wrong, because that gets a chuckle out of her. It's almost scary, but, she is laughing, so that's...a good sign? Maybe?

Probably not, honestly. ]

[ And in exchange for the laugh, maybe she'll tell her what she knows, for now. ]

As for teaching it Flamethrower...supposedly, there are compact discs which have data for special techniques stored in them. Putting them on a Pokemon's head makes them learn the technique, but they break after one use. And not only that, they need to be compatible with it.

Apparently, though, Happiny can learn it. ...Perhaps Igglybuff can, as well.

[She was just pointing the facts out and seeing Asuka chuckle is...she's not even sure how to describe it. But it's definitely surprising, she just doesn't look like someone who would smile.

Upon learning new information, Kaori examines Igglybuff's head like she'd find a hidden slot eventually.]

I guess I have to see it for myself first...putting a disk on its head and see it spit fire a moment after...

[Simply unbelievable. But the fact that they're here is unbelievable as well, so...]

I'm not sure if this world is ready for Igglybuff and Flamethrower combo...on the other hand we should try to make them stronger, shouldn't we? As trainers.

Right. As long as we're taking care of them, we should make sure they grow up to become the best they can be, right?

[ A surprisingly parental statement from Asuka...she probably has an ulterior motive. ]

Got a name, kid?

[She couldn't agree more with Asuka, even though she's a little surprised...didn't she almost tear off Happiny's hair, or whatever that is?]

Who are you calling a kid? You're probably my age or slightly older.

[Seriously, what's with this kid...]

...I'm twenty-eight, so, unless you're cursed like I am, I highly doubt that.

And my name is Captain Asuka Langley Shikinami.

Yeah, right. And I'm twenty-four.

[It's definitely the first time she's seeing a girl who raises her age on her own will.

Kaori realizes that her own introduction didn't have enough spark like Asuka's (a captain...? She should've said something cool like that too!) so she crosses her arms on her chest.]

Captain of what?

Kuhscheiße. You're probably around how old I look. Maybe a bit older. Sixteen at most.

And if you must know, I'm the Captain of the European Air Force. ...On hiatus, currently, because I was stationed in Japan, but regardless, the title stands.

[ She tips her hat to her... ]

Though I haven't piloted a plane in quite some time.

[Kaori exchanges gazes with her Igglybuff remaining silent for a longer while. She really has to reconsider what's more surprising: arriving here or the fact that they let fourteen years pilot planes.

It'll take time for her to buy this story. But she might play along for now and salute.]

Um, nice to meet you...captain?

[She should make it sound a little more convincing...]

I doubt they'll give you a plane to pilot here...I've seen a Pokémon that looked like a bird, I think? It was too small to fly on it, though.

[ She was a prodigy, way back when. It's just how things are. ]

Nowadays, the only thing I'm piloting is my Eva. ...It's an 80-meter-tall mech.

I wish I could show you, but...

[ She takes her hat off, and points to the red hairclips on her head. They look kind of hi-tech...but they also look a bit like the horns of a devil. ]

This is the Interface Headset I wear, to sync with it. ...I never take it off.

[She's tech savvy like any fourteen-year-old nowadays but she sees something like this for the first time in her life.]

I guess you tried it already? Summoning...syncing with it?

[Or whatever Asuka calls it.]

If you could use it that would be cheating, though...

[She leans in closer with a stern expression, not even blinking once as she's gazing straight into Asuka's eyes.]

If you'll ever get your hands on it again...I want a ride.

I can't summon it, no. It's not magic or anything. But there's no one I can call to drop it in or anything...I don't have any way of getting in contact with my co-workers, so I'll just have to tough it out for now.

As for getting a ride...

[ She grumbles... ]

...As long as you don't touch anything on the inside, I suppose I can show you what it looks like.
